The Start of Everything

Fake it till you make it

“Fake it till you make it”

I believe in this statement

It just feels true and I am not just talking about the fact that we have heard people say it a lot. At one point, we are all beginners at everything. There is a point in every career or sports performance or relationship where you need to wade out past your current skill level.

When you think about it, that is what we are all doing all the time. Personal development is actually just a process of stretching into that 10% just outside your current skill level. Spend enough time in that 10% and soon that becomes the new skill level.

So in this quick little blog, I thought we could break down this common statement, so we can all benefit from faking it a little.

Here are my key points

  1. Really take a hard look at where you are at. I feel this principle works when you are near or at 10% above the current skill level. More than that and you may perform so badly you damage confidence and future efforts. Less than 10% feels like you played it safe and you might not learn all you could.
  2. Do not be afraid to fail. You always learn the most when stuffing something up. If you find results well below an acceptable standard, you might be overestimating your starting skill level, which is leaving you faking it a little too much.
  3. The saying is ‘Fake it till you make it.’.You are stretching and challenging yourself to grow skill levels and eventually play at a higher level. Remember the point is to actually make it, to incorporate this higher performance as your standard. If that is not happening, then you are just a faker.
  4. It takes energy and bravery to put yourself out beyond current ability and risk failure. Remember to rest. Let the new skills groove in before going again.
  5. Consistent incremental growth is like compound interest, you will be amazed at how it accumulates over the years. Always be looking to play 10% above current ability.

Important side note. I am specifically talking about businesses, relationships, DIY backyard projects etc. If you are a medical surgeon or a commercial pilot do not try this out ever!

I honestly believe growing and learning is a fundamental part of what makes us human. Never ever stop trying to grow past your previous best, that is what living is all about.
